DDoS attack rains down on Amazon cloud
Bitbucket, a code-hosting service that utilizes Amazon.com’s compute infrastructure, was hit with over 19 hours of downtime due to DDoS attack that stretched over the weekend.
While the attack started Friday night with a flood of UDP packets, 16 hours later the attack was stopped by Amazon’s technical staff. On Sunday the attack resumed with a 2 hour flood of TCP SYN connection requests. Early Monday morning a 3rd attack, lasting for close to 1.5 hours focused on taking down one of Amazon’s edge routers.

Confiker smites Oxford Brookes network
The ever mysterious purpose for Confiker continues to confound. However, the open network based at Oxford’s Brookes University was affected by the worm with Confiker showing up on shared PCs and servers.
The version affecting the network appears to be the strain that comprises close to 6 million computers.

Spam growth surpasses ‘Storm’ virus
Since the beginning of 2009, spam has increased by 141%. The number of spam messages carrying virus “payloads” ballooned in the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2009 which has surpassed the volume carried by the “Storm” virus of 2007. During the 2nd quarter of 2009 it was believed 14 million computers had been corralled into a botnet.
It is believed that while there was a temporary drop due to the McColo ISP shut down spammers have been retooling their networks and growing their botnets.

UK Broadband Internet Users Spend 30 Hours Online Per Week
A new study shows that the average British citizen spends 30 hours a week online. While 2 hours a day are related to work, citizens spend 3 hours per week on the ‘Net for pleasure and leisure.
93% of ‘Net users now shop on the Internet, with 79% spending up to 2 hours a week with their online shopping. 18% do not utilize online banking while 28% spend between 1 to 2 hours banking online while 44% spend up to an hour per week with online banking.
