5 Security Lessons From Real-World Data Breaches
For every publicly reported data breach, dozens of similar breaches remain unknown.
Armed with common network management tools and custom malware, cyber criminals are more sophisticated than ever. While information security tactics and technology have also advanced, they have not done so at the pace of the attackers.
The five lessons learned from real-world intrusions include:
- Get serious about Web application security
The first form of attack on any network is through an organization’s website.
- Add layers of security controls
Internal firewalls, encryption or database monitoring software can alert security staff, thus thwarting attacks.
- Understand the limits of security technology
Understanding security technology limits, such as antivirus update periods, can help you understand where vulnerabilities lie. For example, an anti-virus firm updates signature files based on wide-spread viruses, not custom malware. Knowing this what else might you be able to add to your network to detect breaches?
- Review third-party systems
Use an internal, or external firm, to review the security of systems purchased by third parties.
- Know that bad incident response is worse than no incident response
Trying to hide breaches can also damage data that can be used for criminal prosecution.
