Clever attack exploits fully-patched Linux kernel
Exposing overlooked weaknesses, a recently published attack is exploiting newer versions of a fully patched Linux kernel. Even during source code reviews the bug is nearly impossible to find. Ironically the exploit only works when the “Security-Enhanced Linux” has been enabled. The bug also works when “PulseAudio” is installed.

China’s Internet Lockdown Hurts Local E-businesses
Blocking the internet for the protection of people can have negative affects on local e-businesses. Ethnic riots that occurred in China’s Xinjiang province a couple of weeks ago is still impacting businesses who do business over the Internet.
To help create regional stability China has turned off the Internet to that region of China. The Internet is slowly being turned back on in certain instances but for some businesses their access is still down.

Five technologies Iran is using to censor the Web
Since Iran’s elections when the Internet became an effective tool for communication among opponents, Iran has refined how it is censoring the Internet.
China has a much larger user base as well as businesses that rely on the Internet. Because such levels of censorship would cripple China’s economy, Iran is able to take its censoring to greater depths than what China can do.
The five main technologies Iran uses to censor the web are:
- IP Blocking
- Traffic Classification (QoS)
- Shallow Packet Inspection
- Packet Fingerprinting
- Deep Packet Inspection/Packet Content Filtering

E-crime efforts to be improved in Home Office strategy
Already costing £40 billion ($65.7 billion US) per year the UK’s Home Office is working to update their e-crime strategy. The newly created Office for Cyber Security in the Cabinet Office will lead a review to be published by December, 2009.
The Police Central E-crime Unit (PCeU) has had recent success in nabbing cybercriminals. The Serious Organized Crime Agency (SOCA) is also another successful organization. SOCA’s specialty is helping to fight crime that takes place in multiple countries.

CEOs Underestimate Security Risks, Survey Finds
A recent survey of 213 CEOs, CIOs and COOs illustrate a knowledge gap between the CEO and other senior managers regarding security risks. 48% of the CEOs polled believe hackers rarely try to access corporate data whereas 53% of other C-level executives believe their corporate data is under constant attack.
